Ukraine has an important power in solving the conflict in Transnistria, believes Moldova’s ex-Minister of Security Services Tudor Botnaru.<\/p>\n

What Mr. Botnaru is proposing is to do a reverse exchange of territories with Ukraine.<\/p>\n

“I have reiterated my point of view related to this issue. I believe that an exchange of territories could be a solution,” Tudor Botnaru said in an interview<\/u><\/strong><\/a> in Romanian to Moldova.ORG, referring to the territory from the Eastern bank of the Nistru River bordering Ukraine.<\/p>\n

Mr. Botnaru believes that no issues should be registered with Ukraine.<\/p>\n

“I don’t think there would be any problems. The exchange of territories is made considering every meter and man,” the ex-Minister of Security Services said. According to him, Russia will have to withdraw its troops from Transnistria in any case.<\/p>\n

“If such thing isn’t possible, we have to do everything possible to replace the Russian troops with international peacekeeping forces,” Tudor Botnaru claimed.<\/p>\n

From a historical perspective, Bessarabia (nowadays Republic of Moldova along with Northern Bucovina, Cernauti region and the Southern Bessarabia, which currently are in Ukraine) and the Herta region (also in Ukraine) was part of Romania before 1940. In exchange of this land that has been acquired by the Soviet Union from Romania in 1940 under the Moscow ultimatum of June 26, 1940 that led the Red Army’s occupation of this territory, USSR leadership in 1940 annexed the territory on the left bank of Nistru, called Moldavian Autonomous Soviet Socialist Republic (known today as Transnistria) to the new created Moldavian Soviet Socialist Republic that is today Republic of Moldova.
