After a stalemate of almost six years, Moldova and Transnistria, its breakaway region have resumed the “5+2” talks in 2011 in Vilnius. Three rounds have been successfully finished, the last one taking place in Vienna during April 17-18, 2012.<\/p>\n

According to a report of the Romanian Center for European Policy, the European integration process can indirectly influence the settlement of the Transnistrian conflict. The difficult financial situation of the separatist authorities from Tiraspol determines the so-called politicians from Transnistria to want having a closer approach with the European Union. If the trade dynamics with intensify in this region, the European dimension could get a higher popular support, while the leadership would have to balance between Russia and the European Union.<\/p>\n

“The economy of Transnistria is weak. Tiraspol is desperate to gain money from the EU. The European funds meant to strengthen the trust on both banks of Nistru River are being seen as a main source for internal development,” an EU official said, according to the think-tank.<\/p>\n

European Union has extended the EUBAM mandate (mission designed to watch over the border with Ukraine\/Transnistria) with four more years. The budged gathered for this project is about 12 million Euro, money intended to strengthen the trust between Moldova and Transnistria.<\/p>\n

Nonetheless, Transnistria is dependent on the Russian natural gas, remittances, loans and other important resources. The current so-called president of Transnistria Evgheny Shevchuk continues the Russia-oriented policies. After he took office, Mr. Shevchuk went several times to Moscow in order to strengthen the relations with Russia and earn Putin’s trust.<\/p>\n

An IMAS survey shows that if a referendum on Transnistria’s entry into EU would be held in the region, over 32% of those who answered would accept, while 31% would vote against.
