Massive demonstrations took place on the streets of Moscow one day ahead of Vladimir Putin’s inauguration. The police brutally reacted and many people were beaten up and arrested. Organizers said more than 20,000 people gathered on the streets of the Russian capital. Over 600 people were arrested. These events happened on May 6.<\/p>\n

May 7, 2012 becomes a new file in Russia’s history. Vladimir Putin is being sworn in for a third term. After his inauguration at Kremlin, Mr. Putin smoothly switched to his Presidential duties. One of the first regulations he signed was the requirement of passing a Russian language and history test imposed to all the immigrants willing to work in Russia.<\/p>\n

May 9, 2012 Mr. Putin together with the current Premier of Russia, Dmitry Medvedev, the one Putin switched positions with, participated at a massive Soviet-style military parade on Red Square.<\/p>\n

“On Red Square, some 14,000 men in Soviet-style gold-glittering parade uniforms and most wearing peaked hats goose-stepped to the thrill of martial music produced by a 1,100-member joint military orchestra. Tanks, self-propelled guns, missiles and armored vehicles (over 100 pieces) rolled past Putin, flanked on the stand by Medvedev and Defense Minister Anatoly Serdyukov,” Russia’s RIA Novosti news agency reported.<\/p>\n

The next day, most of the Russians returned to work, while some teenagers continued to remain of the streets downtown Moscow. Russian journalists, poets, writers, authors and TV personalities said they will gather on May 13 at Pushkin Square in Moscow and ‘promenade’ down the street. Boris Akunin, pro-democracy activist released an invitation to the public to join the group which will “test if Muscovites are free to promenade in their city squares and parks, or if some special pass is required,” the same agency informed.<\/p>\n

A report of Jamestown Foundation explains that Russian police has demonstrated that it is not well-prepared to control a restive Moscow. OMON is small in size and not equipped accordingly in order to control the city of 20 million inhabitants.<\/p>\n

“The Moscow precinct police are corrupt; their morale is low and riot training – zero. Arresting the protest leaders only mobilized the social-networked activists, who do not have a distinct chain of command. If Putin is out of touch, however – say while at Camp David – the regime may implode in hours since no one is ready to act decisively in an emergency without direct orders. It is possible that Putin does not dare leave Russia, afraid the Moscow protests may swell out of control,” concludes the author of the story.
