Four days after the Broadcasting Coordination Council of Moldova withdrew the license of NIT TV station, the United Nations Mission to Moldova urges the national authorities to “restore without delay the license of NIT.”<\/p>\n

The media outlet is biased favoring the Party of Communists from Moldova. It has repeatedly been fined for non-compliance with the Broadcasting rules. One such transgression was neglecting to include Romanian subtitles with their journalistic reports and movies which were mostly broadcasted in Russian. The Broadcasting Coordination Council reasoned the decision by saying that NIT does not respect the principle of plurality of opinion and sources used in the process of making a report.<\/p>\n

“The United Nations in Moldova expresses serious concern with the withdrawal by the Audiovisual Coordination Council on April 5 of the license of the television broadcaster Noile Idei Televizate (NIT),” says UN in a press release.<\/p>\n

NIT does not broadcast as of April 7, when the regulation came into force.<\/p>\n

The UN says there is no indication in the decision of audiovisual institution “of actions by NIT which might legitimately justify the radical measure of withdrawing its license.”<\/p>\n

“NIT wasn’t a media outlet which has made journalism, but a mean of propaganda – of Communist, Soviet and Russian propaganda. It was an anti-state measure of propaganda which has compromised the Republic of Moldova, poised the relations of Moldova with the EU and Romania, it had always promoted a racist and xenophobe hysteria against Romania,” Constantin Tanase, a well-known columnist at Moldova’s daily newspaper TIMPUL, said in an editorial article.<\/p>\n

The leadership of the channel said they will appeal the decision in Court in order to restore their license.<\/p>\n

“The team of NIT informs their viewers about the temporary halt of the broadcast, as of today until the day when the Court will issue a final decision,” wrote the administration of the TV station on their website at the time when they turned off their live broadcasting.<\/p>\n

A day after the issuance of the decision to turn off the channel, a group of Communist supporters protested in front of the Broadcasting Coordination Council of Moldova demanding the renewal of NIT’s license and chanted “Down with the censorship!”
