The President of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe (PACE), Jean-Claude Mignon had meetings with Moldovan officials yesterday in Chisinau welcoming “the end of the political deadlock in which the country has been immersed for three years and called on all those involved in Moldovan politics to look to the future constructively,” informs the Council of Europe in a press release.<\/p>\n

“I have conveyed to the President of the Republic, Mr. Timofti, my wishes for his success. His election marks a new start in Moldovan political life. In this context, all players must now show responsibility by accepting the democratic legitimacy of institutions, in particular the legitimacy of a president elected in accordance with constitutional requirements,” Mr. Mignon said.
\nNicolae Timofti emphasized the importance of a peaceful settlement of the Transnistrian conflict.<\/p>\n

“The Republic of Moldova wants an exclusively peaceful settlement of the Transnistrian conflict and we need international support, especially from PACE,” the Moldovan President said.
\nAfter he started his term in office, Mr. Mignon said that he will focus on the ‘frozen’ conflicts.<\/p>\n

“I assure you that I will pay a lot of attention to the reintegration process of the Republic of Moldova and I would be glad PACE and the Council of Europe to positively contribute at the management of this ‘frozen’ conflict,” added the official.<\/p>\n

The President of PACE encouraged the Moldovan statesmen to continue making use of the expertise of the Venice Commission in the process of drafting reforms.<\/p>\n

“You can count on our full support in your efforts towards European integration. In this regard, progress in the honoring of the obligations and commitents entered into by the Republic of Moldova in the context of the Council of Europe is the best way of speeding up this integration process,” he added.<\/p>\n

The President of the Assembly visits Moldova from April 2 until April 5, 2012. Today he will travel to Transnistria to meet representatives from the breakaway region.
