The judicial system in Moldova is not independent because there is external pressure from the state power. The statement belongs to the Moldovan President Nicolae Timofti, who participated yesterday in an interview at Prime TV station.<\/p>\n

The President said that until 1990s there was a certain system, while after the ‘90s reforms have been implemented. According to him, the system efficiently worked until 2001 when the Communist regime returned in Moldova.<\/p>\n

Referring to the judicial system established after 2001, Mr. Timofti stated that “unfortunately, it was established a system where the judge lost his real independence. He came under the Power’s influence and other factors,” the President said.<\/p>\n

He also expressed his dissatisfaction regarding corruption and he strongly disagrees with the mixture between the Courts and corruption.<\/p>\n

“There have been many cases where financial interests were involved,” stated Mr. Timofti.<\/p>\n

The President said he is against the initiative to withdraw the privileges of the judges.<\/p>\n

“It is not right to withdraw the immunity of the judge. I have always defended this principle in order it to stay in our legislation,” the Moldovan official said.<\/p>\n

To have a more efficient judicial system, the President proposes a measure to motive the judges through higher salaries, starting from 1.000 Euro.<\/p>\n

Until being invested, Nicolae Timofti was judge and President of the Superior Council of Magistrates.
