Moldova has an elected President. After 917 days of political stalemate, Nicolae Timofti was chosen as President of the Republic of Moldova. He was elected with 62 votes of 101 deputies who casted their votes. The deputies of the Communist Party refused to vote.<\/p>\n

The chosen President expressed his gratitude to the deputies who voted him, promising that the co-operation between the state powers “will be defended according to the Constitution.”<\/p>\n

“I think that together with you and with the whole governance we will succeed to achieve everything we want,” Mr. Timofti said.<\/p>\n

Veterans of the War on Nistru have gathered in front of the Republican Palace (the building where the election took place) and welcomed the new President, applauding and chanting “Timofti President!” and “Victory!”<\/p>\n

The pro-European leader thanked the people for their trust and support, saying that he has no other interest besides leading the country towards the European Union.<\/p>\n

The former acting President Marian Lupu who chaired until now said that today is an important day for Moldova.<\/p>\n

“Today we didn’t come to an end, but we are just starting,” said Mr. Lupu.<\/p>\n

Jean-Claude Mignon, the Head of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe has welcomed the election of Nicolae Timofti.<\/p>\n

“I would like to congratulate Nicolae Timofti wholeheartedly on his election as President of the Republic of Moldova. It will be my pleasure to be able to wish him every success during a visit to his country from 2 to 5 April,” said Jean-Claude Mignon in a statement.<\/p>\n

Romanian President Traian Basescu was the first foreign President to congratulate Mr. Timofti for his success.<\/p>\n

Nicolae Timofti, 64, comes from a family which suffered as a result of the Soviet deportations to Siberia. Currently, Mr. Timofti is the chairman of the Superior Council of Magistrates.
