Moldova might have a president as of March 16. Deputies of the Moldovan Parliament decided on March 7 the date of the next attempt to elect the president. The bill was initiated by the acting president, Marian Lupu.<\/p>\n

The initiative was supported by the Liberals, although during the debate they were skeptical regarding this project.<\/p>\n

The head of the Socialists, Igor Dodon has welcomed the initiative, hoping that Moldova will finally have a president.<\/p>\n

The date was set, but no candidates have been registered so far. The members of the Alliance for European Integration said they have a candidate, but will say his name later.
\n“I believe that at the beginning of the next week the latest, we will introduce to you our candidate,” said the acting president, Marian Lupu.<\/p>\n

“Vis-à-vis the candidate, I can only tell you one thing: he is a person who’s according to all the moral and professional criteria and will be a very good president for the Republic of Moldova,” said Vlad Filat, the Moldovan premier.<\/p>\n

It is still unclear whether or not at least 61 deputies will vote in favor of the candidate proposed by the rulling coalition.<\/p>\n

The political deadlock sticks in Moldova for more than two years now. As of April 2009, Mihai Ghimpu, the head of Liberal Party was the acting president, followed by the current acting president Marian Lupu, the head of the Democratic Party.<\/p>\n

After electing the president, Moldova might enter the World Records Guinness Book as the country with the longest period without a president.
