By Valeriu Gonta\/ Chisinau\/ Moldova.ORG\/ — As of today, the European Parliament (EP) has a new president. The German Socialist Martin Schulz was elected with 387 votes. According to the EP’s official website, he will lead the European Parliament until the next elections which will be held in June 2014. Jerzey Buzek was the previous president of the European Parliament since July 2009.<\/p>\n

The new president began his political career when he was 19, joining the German Social Democratic Party. Later on, he became one of the youngest mayors in the German State of North Rhine-Westphalia.<\/p>\n

"For many years, I served as mayor of my town and listening to people’s concerns and answering their questions was my daily business. This still remains a very important part of my job," Mr. Schultz said.<\/p>\n

Joining the European Parliament in 1994, Mr. Schulz has worked within the sub-committee of Human Rights and the Civil Liberties Committee.<\/p>\n

The European Parliament is one of the main bodies of the European Union. It represents the voice of the European citizens.
