Chisinau \/ Moldova.ORG\/ — President Barack Obama made his first full-scale reaction to the turbulent events of recent months in the Arab world.<\/p>\n

In his keynote speech on Washington’s policy toward the Middle East and North Africa, Obama has urged Israelis and Palestinians to dissociate on the 1967 borders, and promised economic aid to Tunisia and Egypt. <\/p>\n

Barack Obama at the State Department initially gives a response to the events of "Arabian spring". Obama made clear that it will oppose lobbied Palestinian declaration of independent state at the forthcoming General Assembly of the United Nations. However, for the first time Obama has supported radical Palestinian demand: <\/p>\n

– We believe that the borders of Israel and Palestine should be determined as of 1967. It shall be mutually agreed upon by the slight exchange of territories as a condition for secure and recognized boundaries between the two countries. The Palestinian people should have the right to self-government and realize their full potential in a sovereign neighboring state.<\/p>\n

Obama also spoke out in support of Israel: <\/p>\n

– Our commitment to Israel’s security is unwavering, and we oppose attempts to allocate this country as an object of criticism in international forums. However, precisely because of our friendship is important for us to tell the truth. The current situation is unacceptable, and Israel should also begin to act decisively in order to achieve sustainable peace. <\/p>\n

Palestinian leader Mahmoud Abbas welcomed the proposal by Obama. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has rejected any mention of the need to return to the borders that existed before the Six Day War in 1967. It is expected that on 20 May Netanyahu and Obama will begin talks in the White House. <\/p>\n

A significant part of the speech was devoted to the support of U.S. political and economic reform in the Middle East and North Africa. Obama has been criticized for inconsistency of its response to civil unrest in these countries for their participation in military action against Libya in the absence of decisive action against Yemen, Bahrain and Syria. Even before applying sanctions against Syrian President Bashar Assad, Obama in his speech said that Assad still has a choice – to take to reform or leave.<\/p>\n

The American president said that the future of the U.S. associated with the Middle East many ties, including economic, security and history. He compared the rocks, the countries in the region fighting for democratic reforms with the fateful moment in American history:<\/p>\n

– The people rebelled, demanding respect for basic human rights. The two leaders resigned from their posts.
\nThe former U.S. Ambassador to Israel Martin Indyk, now – the vice-president and director of foreign policy studies at the Brookings Institution in Washington, said Obama’s speech important: <\/p>\n

– I think the president has done a good job trying to find a middle ground between our values and interests in the Middle East. In the past, before the "Arab Spring", a few American presidents in a row constantly reminded of our interest in stability the region, the need to uphold values such as democracy, self-accountable to the people of the government. Barack Obama today showed that openly supports the current wave of mass demands for political reform in the Arab world. However, it clearly states that is not received security of our allies in the Middle East region. So, Obama is trying to find the optimal balance between security of Israel and the Palestinian aspirations to establish a sovereign neighboring state in accordance with the 1967 borders. The president is being cautious and makes it clear that it is not a new initiative; he tries to remind some important landmarks, which earlier had been the subject of negotiations. In particular, it is about achieving the two compromises, the key for the resumption of Israeli-Palestinian negotiations. The first – is the creation of a Palestinian state in accordance with the 1967 borders, which would be accompanied by the inclusion into Israel’s largest Jewish settlements and the evacuation of others. Another tradeoff is reduced to the recognition of the legitimate concerns of the Palestinians the Israelis their security. Therefore, the Israeli withdrawal from Palestinian territories should be gradual and necessarily caused by the Palestinians to comply with security guarantees. I think that these two important principles may form the basis for the resumption of negotiations – said Martin Indyk. <\/p>\n

To persuade Barack Obama’s quest for democratization in the Middle East region must be accompanied by his economic development. U.S. president in his speech outlined a number of initiatives in relation to Egypt and Tunisia, aimed at improving the financial situation and investment climate in these countries.
