Chisinau \/ Moldova.ORG\/ — Two explosions have ripped through a paramilitary training centre in north-west Pakistan, killing at least 80 people in the deadliest attack since Osama bin Laden was killed by US commandos.<\/p>\n

At the moment police say that the blasts were caused by suicide attacks which have the purpose to avenge the death of Osama bin Laden earlier this month.<\/p>\n

The Pakistan Taliban immediately claimed responsibility and said bigger attacks were to follow.<\/p>\n

A suicide bomber on a motorbike struck at the gates just as young recruits boarded buses to go on leave after their course. Police in Shabqadar, close to the border with Afghanistan, said a second explosion came seconds later.<\/p>\n

The al-Qaeda leader was killed during a US commando raid in the northern Pakistani town of Abbottabad on 2 May.<\/p>\n

"I was sitting in a van waiting for my colleagues. We were in plain clothes and we were happy we were going to see our families," say Ahmad Ali, a wounded paramilitary policeman.<\/p>\n

Ehsanullah Ehsan, a spokesman for the Pakistan Taliban, told AFP by telephone from an undisclosed location: "This was the first revenge for Osama’s martyrdom. Wait for bigger attacks in Pakistan and Afghanistan."<\/p>\n

The bomber struck soon after dawn as the recruits were on their way out of the gates of the Frontier Constabulary academy in the town of Charsadda on leave. Police said there was another explosion around the same time but it had not been determined if that too was caused by a suicide bomber.<\/p>\n

The BBC’s correspondent says many politicians and members of the public appear to be less concerned about Bin Laden’s presence in Pakistan and more about the way the US was able to carry out its raid without official permission.<\/p>\n

The US gives billions of dollars in military and humanitarian aid to Pakistan, but has questioned its reliability as an ally in combating the militants.<\/p>\n

The BBC’s Aleem Maqbool, in Islamabad, says the security forces have often been the target of such attacks as they fight the Pakistani Taliban across the north-west of the country, but Friday’s bombing is the deadliest attack this year.<\/p>\n
