Transnistria’s Coordination Board of Civil Society Organizations and Political Parties believes that thank to the stiff position of the Transnistrian region, which stated 20 years ago its independence, the neighbor Republic of Moldova has preserved its statehood and sovereignty, whereas Russia has the possibility to preserve its military presence in Southeastern Europe and to influence the development of events in the Black Sea region in its interests.<\/p>\n

The organization formulated this opinion in its statement, issued in response to the recent statement on Moldo-Transnistrian settlement made by the Russian Federation’s Minister of Foreign Affairs Sergei Lavrov during his meeting with Moldovan Deputy Premier, Minister of Foreign Affairs and European Integration Iurie Leanca.<\/p>\n

The statement authors wrote that the Transnistrian civil society was puzzled and strongly disappointed by Lavrov’s position on the need to resume official talks on working out a political compromise that would suppose the model of a united state within the Republic of Moldova’s territorial integrity, with a special legal status to be provided for Transnistria.<\/p>\n

The Coordination Board presumes that what Sergei Lavrov calls "a political compromise that would suppose the model of a united state" looks rather like surrendering of Transnistria – together with Russia’s compatriots living in the region.<\/p>\n

The Coordination Board criticized the Russian foreign ministry’s readiness to put an end to the Russian military presence in Transnistria, in a belief that this is but "capitulation to the West, which builds up its military presence everywhere where it thinks necessary, spitting on the position of even the United Nations, not to mention opponents".<\/p>\n

The statement said that as long as Transnistria does not receive the international recognition of its independence, the weapons and ammunition that have remained in Transnistria after the memorable events in 2002-2003 shall remain where they are now – in the Transnistrian region, "and not a single troop train with ammunition or other military equipment shall leave our republic".<\/p>\n

The Board offered an opinion that the Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs is making reverences towards the Republic of Moldova for the sake of preserving Chisinau’s mythical neutral status in the updated Moldo-Russian Treaty of Friendship and Cooperation, which, in Moscow’s belief, will be holding back Moldova’s accession to NATO.<\/p>\n

"The West offers its patronage to the Transnistrian Moldovan Republic, saying that it will guarantee our rights of national minorities within a united Europe.
