The chief and, in fact, only source of doubts about the existence of Moldova as such lies outside Moldova, believes professor Dr. Alla Yazkova, Director of the Center for Mediterranean and Black Sea Studies, Chairperson of the Board for Mediterranean and Black Sea Researches at the Institute of Europe of the Russian Academy of Sciences.<\/p>\n

She took part in the Chisinau-Moscow video bridge called "Moldova: the Right to Exist, as Seen by Scientists", and said that the presence of certain sayings coming from Romania, and primarily from its President Traian Basescu, agitate the civil society.<\/p>\n

"There is no doubt that the Moldovan identity does exist as such. Why has such question arisen? Who casts doubt on the existence? According to the international law, the Republic of Moldova was formed in 1991 as an independent state, and this very state was admitted to the United Nations Organization in 1992. Therefore nobody may say that the Moldovan state does not exist", said professor Yazkova, adding that, according to recent opinion polls, 65% Moldova residents stand for Moldova’s European integration as an independent state, and 72% stand for preserving and developing good relations with Russia.<\/p>\n

Alla Yazkova thinks it is very important that Moldova and its citizens realize that the republic should preserve 2 vectors in its external policy – Eastern and Western.<\/p>\n

Dr. Vladimir Korobov, Director of the Center for South Ukrainian Region Researches, said that "it is just wild to doubt the existence of Moldova", that Basescu’s public statements are only the tip of the iceberg, and that the Transnistrian conflict settlement may well become an essential factor of Moldova’s consolidation and development, which will be the republic’s sound answer to the Romanian policy.<\/p>\n

Dr. Vladimir Simendeyev of the Historical Memory Organization remarked that the doubts in question exist not only outside Moldova.<\/p>\n

"Certain political groups in Moldova, who identify themselves with the Romanian political class, do very much for stockpiling the doubts. The teaching of "The History of the Romanians" school subject instead of the previous "The History of Moldova" is only one of the steps being made for diluting the national self-consciousness and for separation of various ethnic groups in Moldova. It is pointless to lay the entire responsibility for own failures on the provocations by external forces. And it is obvious that nationalism is advantageous for a certain part of the local intelligentsia".<\/p>\n

Moldova’s ex-ambassador to Romania Emilian Ciobu said that Moldova has been split up ideologically, and that certain groups use this circumstance for paving their way into power echelons.<\/p>\n

"I am sure we shall preserve our State, but a whole generation of our youth will be lost for the country’s future", said the diplomat.<\/p>\n

Dr. Mikhail Guboglo of the Russian Academy of Sciences Institute of Ethnology and Anthropology said that according to some recent opinion polls, up to 21% ethnic Moldovans regard the language they speak as the Romanian language.<\/p>\n

"This means that the population’s ethnic self-consciousness is being shattered and is weakening.
