Moldova will hold local elections on 5 June. The MPs of the ruling alliance today passed a draft decision on the matter.<\/p>\n

The opposition Communists did not agree with this date, saying that there will be no time left for preparations and for the implementation of the e-register. They said that 19 June would be more opportune. "The Party of Communists is ready for local polls, but if we call the elections on 5 June, the Central Electoral Commission (CEC) will have to speed up the electoral procedures and the compilation of the electoral lists. Yet, the e-register is not sufficiently prepared and we are likely to face many technical problems," Communist MP Sergiu Sirbu said.<\/p>\n

CEC chairman Iurie Ciocan said that since the decision had been taken, the CEC will observe the legislation and will complete all the necessary procedures till 5 June. "The electoral lists from most mayoralties have been checked and the e-register is already at the CEC. The mayors, the mayoralties’ councillors and the district councillors will be elected in all Moldovan settlements on 5 June. Over 100,000 people will run for these posts. The electoral campaign will start 60 days before the elections’ date," Ciocan added.<\/p>\n

The leader of the parliamentary faction of the Liberal Democratic Party, Mihai Godea, said that it was not fair on behalf of the junior coalition partner Liberal Party to push for setting the date for the local polls, as a string of technical amendments should have been operated to the Electoral Code. "The stipulation that sees that each electoral contender should benefit from one minute of air time on TV and radio should be amended. If there are 100,000 candidates, this will be impossible.
