Chi\u0219in\u0103u\/ Moldova.ORG \/ — Nineteen years ago today, on the 2nd of March, the same day when Moldova was admitted as a member of the United Nations, the military conflict between Moldova and the Kremlin-backed separatists from its Transnistrian region started in three areas along the Nistru River.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Transnistria is an eastern region of Moldova bordering Ukraine. After the Soviet Union’s decoupling, many Russians and Ukrainians from Moldova migrated to Transnistria, where Moldovans were the majority back then (1989 polls: 40%).<\/p>\n

Right after Moldova gained independence, Russians and other minorities felt insecure and started to agitate for creating a separate country – the Transnistrian Moldavian Republic. This was a part of the larger strategy of the Soviet Union to destabilize the situation in the Soviet Republics in order to prevent them from quilting the union (in Georgia, Baltic States, Ukraine, Moldova, Azerbaijan). <\/p>\n

Armed clashes began on the 2nd of March between separatist paramilitary forces and Moldovan poorly organized forces (mainly police and volunteers). The Transnistrian forces have had a strong support from the Russia’s 14th army stationed in Transnistria that provided munitions, arms and military equipment. Moldova received aid only from Romania, some arms and military vehicles.<\/p>\n

The military conflict ended on the 21st of July with a ceasefire between Russia and Moldova, signed by Russian President Boris Yeltsin and Moldovan President Mircea Snegur. Unfortunately, the political conflict persists until today, because separatists continue to defend their position to become an independent state.<\/p>\n

Even after the OSCE Summit in Istanbul in 1999, when Russia signed the Adapted Treaty and committed to withdraw its 14th army from Moldova, there weren’t any changes. <\/p>\n

Now, the region and its residents is deeply affected by the human rights violation. People are governed by a totalitarian regime. Igor Smirnov acts as the self-proclaimed president of this enclave since 1991. There are frequent cases of unreasonable arrests of civilians, who jailed without trial.<\/p>\n

Today, in different regions of both Moldova and its Transnistrian region, were organized commemoration meetings of the Transnistrian conflict victims.<\/p>\n

In Chisinau, after bringing flowers to the Stefan cel Mare monument, it was organized a memorial march from the National Square to the Memorial Complex “Eternitatea”. At noon the veterans went to „Sfântul Laz\u0103r” cemetery and afterwards to a dinner at the Army House organized by the Chisinau City hall.<\/p>\n
