Latest reports today, February 21, show that the unrest in eastern Libya is heading to the capital Tripoli. According to initial reports, gun shots were heard in the center of Tripoli and in other regions, Al-Jazeera reporting 61 people killed in Tripoli on the 21st of February. Other unconfirmed reports say that during the night, protesters attacked the headquarters of Al-Jamahiriya Two television and Al-Shabab, and some government buildings.<\/p>\n

According to the Saudi Al-Arabiya TV, the Conference Center where the General Congress is periodically holding meetings was set on fire. British Petroleum Company is going to evacuate its personnel from Libya and will suspend their activities due to massive riots. Spanish Foreign Minister Trinidad Jimenez said today, the 21st of February that the EU Member States will coordinate the evacuation of European citizens from Libya. A Turkish Airlines plane was sent to evacuate Turkish citizens from Benghazi, but Libyan authorities have blocked the landing territories and the plane was forced to return to Turkey.<\/p>\n

The details about the number of protestants and severity of clashes in Tripoli are vague. There were clashes between protesters and security forces in most eastern cities of the country, especially in Benghazi, where the opposition to Libyan leader Moammar Gadhafi is concentrated. Widespread protests erupted in Tripoli in the evening of the 20th of February and it seems that they have intensified because of Ghadhafi’s son Seif al-Islam’s speech. In his speech, al-Islam has been trying to unveil the new face of the regime, reiterating the political, social and economic reforms, he has long advocated to hold Libya’s tribal society together. Though in his speech Seif al-Islam distanced himself from the old-regime tactics, the protesters in Tripoli rejected the young Libyan leader and began screaming slogans against Seif al-Islam.<\/p>\n

In his speech, Seif al-Islam has hinted that he had the approval of his father and some elements of the army and the national guard have claimed the destruction of the “seditious elements” who spread the disorder.
\nHowever, unconfirmed reports about the failures of the army in Benghazi and Al Bayda are sharing the doubt on the regime’s capacity to count on the full loyalty of the army and the ability to keep the situation under control.
