\nMoldova has started media cooperation with the Middle East. An agreement on bilateral cooperation between the MOLDPRES state news agency and the Palestinian state news agency Wafa was signed in Chisinau.<\/p>\n

MOLDPRES director-general Vlad Darie told a news conference that the agreement lays the foundation of media cooperation between Moldova and the Middle East. For us, the events in the Middle East were as an "unknown spot", as all the stories used to be taken over from the world s most important agencies and we had no first-source information. The presence of this news agency here in Chisinau will make it possible to have first-source information and cover fairly and objectively the situation in this region, which unfortunately is still "hot", Darie said.<\/p>\n

Darie specified that the initiative to sign the agreement came via the Romanian news agency Agerpres, with which MOLDPRES has special cooperation relations. Over the last two years, MOLDPRES has initiated a string of activities in order to establish new international relations, by becoming member of a string of regional news agencies. Presently, we are holding negotiations to sign a similar document on cooperation with a news agency from Israel, Darie said.<\/p>\n

Darie said that for a long period, the West has been informed about Moldova only via Russian media. Yet, presently things change, as Moldova is a country that quickly advances towards the EU and many news agencies from abroad pay more attention to it than before.<\/p>\n

The head of the MOLDPRES news department, Fidel Galaico, confirmed the lack of any ideological and political censorship in cooperation relations with foreign news agencies. Galaico said that the Arab world, which has a population of more than half a billion people, represents a huge potential.<\/p>\n

A representative of the Wafa news agency, Ziad Abulhaja, said that he feels honoured to represent the first Arab news agency to sign a cooperation agreement with MOLDPRES. He said that Wafa "commits to provide several hundreds of stories to MOLDPRES daily and respectively, to take over and spread stories from Moldova".<\/p>\n

Set up in 1972, the Wafa agency is an important international source of information about the Middle East, the news stories of which are taken over by 24 Arab countries. It has 3000 employees, five regional bureaus, 12 reporters abroad, and provides stories for the world s biggest TV channels.<\/p>\n
