\nAbout 100,000 Moldovan citizens will benefit from 14 development programmes launched in late 2010 within the project "Moldova: Cooperation and Regional Development", carried out in 2008-2010.<\/p>\n

As much as 110 million lei (about 7 million euros) was allocated from the national fund for regional development to this end last year. This money was supplemented with 1.75 million euros in non-refundable assistance on behalf of the British Government, under a memorandum of understanding between the Department for International Development and the Moldovan government.<\/p>\n

At a today’s conference on the project’s completion, UK Ambassador to Moldova Keith Shannon said that the financed programmes are implemented in the fields of water and sewerage supply, roads’ restoration and waste management. The British diplomat said that these programmes, of which three have already started, will make it possible to develop the business, to enter new sales markets, create new jobs, improve people’s health condition and develop tourism.<\/p>\n

Attending the event, Prime Minister Vlad Filat emphasized that, due to this project, the government was able to launch policies on regional development and to build institutional capacities to implement these policies in the Centre, South and North regions, where regional development agencies were set up. In continuation, the government’s four-year action programme provides for the creation of regional development agencies in Chisinau, the autonomous territorial unit of Gagauzia and Transnistria by 2012, the prime minister added.<\/p>\n

Filat said that, in four years, the government is to implement actions of utmost importance meant to help reduce the regional lack of balance by implementing investment projects and stimulating the economic growth in the disadvantaged areas.<\/p>\n
