\nBritish nationals in Cairo, Alexandria and Suez are being told to leave if it is safe for them to do so, following days of violent protests across Egypt.<\/p>\n

But despite upgrading its advice, the Foreign Office (FCO) is not currently organising a formal evacuation.<\/p>\n

Most of the 30,000 UK tourists in Egypt are in resorts like Sharm El Sheikh, which the FCO says are safe.<\/p>\n

Foreign Secretary William Hague has warned of Egypt falling into the hands of extremists unless reforms are made.<\/p>\n

Officials are warning against all non-essential travel to Cairo, Alexandria, Luxor and Suez, and say that anyone "without a pressing need" to be in those cities, excluding Luxor, should leave "by commercial means" if it is safe for them to do so.<\/p>\n

They also say Britons should adhere to a nationwide curfew imposed between 1600 and 0800 local time, and stay indoors if they are in an area that has experienced demonstrations.<\/p>\n

The US embassy in Cairo is telling Americans to consider leaving the country as soon as possible and will begin evacuation flights on Monday.<\/p>\n

Turkey is also evacuating its citizens.<\/p>\n

The Foreign Office says arrangements are being made for the spouses and children of British embassy staff in Cairo to leave the country – but they will travel on ordinary commercial flights, not specially-chartered planes.
\n‘Gunshots’<\/p>\n

In Cairo, demonstrators are back on the streets for a sixth day, demanding the resignation of President Hosni Mubarak.<\/p>\n

Clashes between the protesters and riot police are believed to have left at least 100 people dead. Thousands have been injured and there has been widespread looting.<\/p>\n

Rosemary Turberville, who is from London and staying in a suburb of Cairo, told the BBC: "The gunshots were evident last night… but in my particular area [now], it’s pretty tranquil.<\/p>\n

"I’m on the 10th floor. I can see people wandering about, some people with bags of shopping, so there may be a shop open down there, but I have plenty of supplies so I don’t see the point in risking going outside."<\/p>\n

Alex Belfield, a presenter with BBC Leeds who is on holiday in Sharm El Sheikh, said tourists at his hotel had been told they could not leave the building for at least 24 hours.<\/p>\n

He said road blocks were in force around the resort, but tourists travelling to and from the airport did seem to be getting through.<\/p>\n

"This whole thing seemed a million miles away yesterday, but last night… when we got back [from dinner] the whole atmosphere had changed.<\/p>\n

"The barricades had gone up at the front of the hotel… and there are 14 security guards in total, making it very clear we were not able to leave the resort."<\/p>\n

But Sean Tipton, from travel body Abta, said the introduction of tighter security measures was not being reported by other customers in Sharm El Sheikh and the resort was "almost totally unaffected".<\/p>\n

"The feedback we’re getting from our customers and tour operators in these resorts is they’re not being barricaded into their rooms – I just want to make very clear, that’s not the case.<\/p>\n

"The Foreign Office is monitoring the situation very carefully. They have staff going out to these resorts and if they had any concerns they would change their advice."<\/p>\n

Mr Tipton said UK tourists required to travel to Luxor, which is a popular start and end point for Nile cruises, were "being taken to the cruise very quickly and got out of the place very quickly".<\/p>\n

And he added that the decision of the US and Turkish governments to evacuate was based on the fact that the vast majority of their citizens were in the Cairo area – and the situation was very different for the UK.<\/p>\n

Excursions from Red Sea resorts to Cairo and ancient Egyptian sites in Giza and Luxor have been cancelled.
\n‘Peaceful reform’<\/p>\n

Flights are also affected and on Saturday, a BMI plane from London Heathrow was turned around mid-air in order to avoid landing in Cairo during the curfew.<\/p>\n

BMI has also cancelled its flights to Cairo on Sunday, while British Airways and Egyptair have altered their schedules.<\/p>\n

Easyjet’s services to Luxor are operating, but passengers are being offered the opportunity to rebook for a later date.<\/p>\n

On Saturday, Prime Minister David Cameron personally telephoned President Hosni Mubarak to urge him to build "democratic legitimacy" and to take a restrained approach to dealing with protesters.<\/p>\n

Foreign Secretary William Hague reiterated that message, telling Sky News he wanted the president to press ahead with "peaceful reform to a more open and democratic society".<\/p>\n

"It is important for him to initiate that transformation and that broadly-based government, and that is what we would like to see," he said.<\/p>\n
