\nThe Moldovan Ministry of Foreign Affairs and European Integration has expressed bewilderment about the information, distributed by some mass media this week – that the Moldovan delegation had allegedly refused to support the United Nations General Assembly Resolution "on condemning the heroization of Nazism" adopted in New York on December 21.<\/p>\n

The Ministry issued a press release on Friday, writing that the UN Resolution did not actually set as its chief objective the elucidation of the question of "heroization of the Nazism". The Resolution "was dedicated to general practices that promote the escalation of the modern forms of racism, racial discrimination, xenophobia and related intolerance" the press release said.<\/p>\n

The Ministry explained the decision to abstain from supporting the Resolution was taken by the Moldovan authorities yet in 2005, and that decision was subsequently reaffirmed by the "abstention" position in 2006, 2007, 2008 and in 2009.<\/p>\n

"The text of the 2010 Resolution did not differ from those proposed in previous years, and this circumstance conditioned the continuity of Moldova’s decision to both abstain from voting and to join the general European Union position on this question", said the Ministry’s press release.<\/p>\n

Its authors also wrote that the positions "contra" or "abstained", which were expressed by 54 countries, including European Union member states and associated members or partners such as the Republic of Moldova, were actually determined, like in the previous years, by the absence of balance in the Resolution’s final text.<\/p>\n

The Ministry wrote that this document does not reflect fully the text-editing proposals made by some delegations. It does not reflect, either, the international concern that no selective approach is made to racial practices, as this is demanded by the Convention on the Liquidation of All Forms of Racial Discrimination.<\/p>\n

Earlier this week, the Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs expressed bewilderment and pity that the Resolution, approved by an overwhelming majority of UN member states, was voted against by the United States, and that a number of countries, including all members of the European Union, abstained. In the Resolution, its authors reflected the problem of the continuing attempts to declare the former Nazi and their allies as participants in national liberations movements.<\/p>\n

The Russian Ministry particularly highlighted the abstention position of three countries – Ukraine, Georgia and Moldova, whose people fought against fascism under the Soviet Army banners.
