\nThe incumbent governor of Moldova’s Gagauz autonomy, Mihail Formuzal, won his second mandate at the 26 December runoff, which saw a voter turnout of 57 per cent.<\/p>\n

Contacted by MOLDPRES, Formuzal said he won 4 per cent more votes than his challenger, Nikolai Dudoglo, the mayor of Gagauzia’s administrative centre Comrat. Thus out of 60,000 voters who participated in the runoff, 52 per cent favoured Formuzal and 48 per cent voted for Dudoglo.<\/p>\n

Formuzal confirmed that the election developed in a transparent atmosphere and noted that the high voter turnout "proves the Gagauzians’ interest in the election of the governor in this year of electoral marathons".<\/p>\n

Mihail Formuzal also said that he will continue the policy of bolstering relations with the central authorities, will step up the authority of Gagauzia in Moldova and abroad, will advocate closer relations with the Moldovan government and will ensure a line of stability in Gagauzia.<\/p>\n

The governor of the Autonomous Territorial Unit of Gagauzia has the right to two consecutive mandates. Formuzal won his first mandate in 2007.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
