\nRepresentatives of the Liberal Democratic Party (PLDM), the Democratic Party (PD) and the Liberal Party (PL) have exchanged opinions on ways to elect the president.<\/p>\n

A PD representative at the coalition talks, Valeriu Lazar, and PL leader Mihai Ghimpu said this on 23 December after the eighth round of talks, during which the non-Communist parties did not decide upon the formation of a coalition.<\/p>\n

The leaders of the PLDM, the PD and the PL made different assessments of the situation. PLDM leader Vlad Filat said that an important step had been taken, noting that the sides needed more time to discuss all details. The Liberal leader Mihai Ghimpu said that an agreement on the creation of a ruling coalition is to be signed soon, while Democrat Valeriu Lazar mentioned that the sides had held constructive discussions.<\/p>\n

Lazar said at the end of the meeting that the discussions did not advance much. "We expressed our position towards the PLDM offer and we discussed a topic of common concern: the election of the head of state. We talked, actually, about a practical way to ensure a four-year government. We did not decide upon formulas, but we have some possible variants, including the candidacy of the PD for the presidential office. Lazar said that despite the fact that the talks with the Party of Communists have been suspended, they are at a more advanced level. He also said that it would be better to form a ruling coalition before the first meeting of the parliament, due on 28 December. Lazar described the offer made by the PLDM to the PD and PL as acceptable.<\/p>\n

The leader of the Liberal Democratic Party, Vlad Filat, said that the sides take further steps in order to make a decision until 28 December. "There are problems that we still have to discuss, but today we took an important step in this process. We had a very constructive discussion, but I cannot give you more details. We are further working on the creation of a functional coalition, the distribution of the posts is important, as well as the working environment. Governing is not an easy action."<\/p>\n

At the same time, PL leader Mihai Ghimpu was optimistic about the signing of an agreement on a centre-right coalition. "We had an amiable, constructive discussion and we have advanced. My opinion is that we are advancing on this path. We have to manage this by 28 December. We did not talk much about the PLDM’s offer, we have focused on other issues. The Liberal Party has done its utmost to keep the Democratic Party within the alliance.
