\nChisinau (Moldova.ORG) — On the 30th of November, the President of Romania, Traian Basescu made a series of declarations, concerning the Republic of Moldova and the situation in the region.<\/p>\n

Regarding the the situation in the Black Sea region, Mr. Basescu said that he doubts the good intentions of the Russian Federation there. Mr. Basescu declared that the presence of the Russian armed forces close to the border of Romania, in Moldova’s Transnistrian region and the presence of the military fleet in Ukraine’s Sevastopol, are not signs of good intentions. Also the Romanian President asked, why does Russia need such a big fleet in such a little sea, especially if Russia mentions all the time about the friendly relationships with the countries in the the Black Sea basin.<\/p>\n

The President mentioned about the anti-missile shield which will be installed in Romania, saying that the Russian part will be permitted to access some data about the military objects, but not to the technology and other secret information.<\/p>\n

Concerning the relationships with the Republic of Moldova, Basescu added that he believes that the Republic of Moldova will unite with Romania in approximately 25 years. He added that the unification is also possible if Moldova joins the European Union, when the citizens of the both countries will decide together concerning the unification. When Moldova joins the EU, this will be also a good example for Ukraine, and a stimulus for Ukraine to also adhere to the EU, Basescu said.<\/p>\n

The declarations of the Romanian President had no official response from the Moldovan authorities, but the Ukrainian and Russian authorities reacted quickly.<\/p>\n

The Director of the government department for the media relations in Ukraine, Oleg Voloshin, declared that Ukraine supports the independence of the Republic of Moldova. The Ukrainian authorities fear that an eventual unification of Moldova with Romania can create a great destabilization in the region, which Romania does not understand at the moment, said the official. Ukrainian authorities warned about the danger of this idea, and suggest to concentrate on the solution of the Transnistria conflict instead.<\/p>\n

The declarations of the Russian authorities were made public soon after the declarations of Ukraine. The first deputy speaker of the Russian Duma (Parliament), Aleksandr Babakov, stated that the declarations of the Romanian President are irresponsible. He also said that these declarations are the result of the lack of trust of Romania towards Russia. In an ironical way, Babakov said that the presence of the Russian military forces is not accepted only by those who want to see the Romanian military forces in Transnistria.<\/p>\n

On December 1, Romania celebrates its National day, when, in 1918, the unification of all Romanian provinces united in one country, including Bessarabia (today’s Republic of Moldova and some territories that are part of Ukraine), Northern Bucovina and Transylvania. This may explain the timing of Basescu’s declarations.
