\nIn anticipation of Saakashvili’s visit to Chisinau, Liberal Party leader and Moldova’s Acting President Mihai Ghimpu decided to undertake a short voyage to Italy to meet Moldovan gastarbeiters working there, after an analogous visit had been made by his electoral rival, Prime Minister and Liberal Democratic Party leader Vladimir Filat.<\/p>\n

Ghimpu visited the Italian city of Padua, claiming that the trip bore no electoral character.<\/p>\n

On Sunday, he explained to local voters in Calarasi town before his flying to Italy that "I had planned this trip yet before we all had come to learn about elections in November. I promised to organize the trip yet when we met with compatriots at the Congress of the Moldovan Diaspora held earlier this year. This is why I am going to Italy today. We should always remember they are our citizens, though life has taken them so far from Moldova".<\/p>\n

To meet with him in Padua, approximately 1.2 thousand Moldovan gastarbeiters gathered from various places in Italy. Ghimpu urged them to vote for the Liberal Party next Sunday. After the long talk, the gastarbeiters enjoyed the performance of a folklore company from Stefan Voda town (southern Moldova), and singers Maria Iliut and Indiana.<\/p>\n

According to the latest findings by the Center for Sociological Researches of Moldova (CSRM), the Liberal Party is going to receive the largest number of votes from the Moldovan diaspora in foreign countries.<\/p>\n
