\nA meeting on the Transnistrian settlement issue in the five plus two format was held in Kiev at the Ukrainian Foreign Ministry on 16 November, Moldova’s bureau for reintegration has said.<\/p>\n

The meeting was opened by Ukrainian Foreign Minister Konstantin Grishchenko, who reiterated Ukraine’s willingness to further actively contribute to a settlement of the Transnistrian conflict in line with the principles of sovereignty and territorial integrity of the Republic of Moldova<\/p>\n

A wide range of issues related to confidence-building measures and prospects of resuming official five plus two talks were discussed at the meeting.<\/p>\n

The sides welcomed progress made in this respect, in particular: the resumption of the rail link Chisinau-Odessa via Tiraspol, the facilitation of the activity of the Transnistrian enterprises, the extension of the term for tilling farmlands situated behind the Ribnita-Tiraspol highway by one year and actions aimed at restoring direct phone communication between the two banks of the Dniester river. Special attention was paid to ways of improving the activity of the confidence-building working groups and enhancing their efficiency.<\/p>\n

In the context of preparations for the OSCE Summit in Astana, the sides pointed out the intensification of the dialogue between Chisinau and Tiraspol as well as in the five plus two format.<\/p>\n

Moldova’s political representative Victor Osipov drew the participants’ attention to such important problems as free movement of people and goods, difficulties faced by Transnistria-based Moldovan schools using Latin script, the situation of some settlements located in the security zone, the cases of Ernest Vardanean and Ilie Cazac who had been arrested in Transnistria.
