On the 19th of October the President of the Russian Federation, Dmitri Medvedev declared at the trilateral meeting with the German Chancellor Angela Merkel and the French President Nicolas Sarkozy that the solution of the transnistrian conflict depends not only on the position of Moscow but also on that of the Chisinau and Tiraspol and also of the European Union and Romania. <\/p>\n

The declarations of the Russian President have provoked different reactions. The Romanian press mentions that Medvedev instead of retreating its occupation army from Moldova tries to throw the problem to the Romania and EU. The declarations raised many questions in Ukraine, which is considered one of the most important actors that can help to solve the transnistrian conflict. The Ukrainian analysts mention that the fact that Medvedev did not speak about the role and the importance of Ukraine in the solution of the conflict is a very unusual situation. In similar declarations in the past the Russian authorities mentioned regularly about the role of the Ukraine in the solution of the transnistria conflict. Ukrainian experts mention that this omitting of the Ukraine may be a voluntary act of the president, which signifies a change of the political attitude of Russia concerning the solution of the transnistrian conflict. Also political analysts declare that a possible reaction of the Ukrainian part may follow after these declarations. The transnistrian authorities and political experts are alerted because of the declarations of the Russian Federation President. Some political experts from transnistria have mentioned that an official declaration of the transnistria self-declared authorities will surely follow soon. The transnistrian political analysts are not satisfied about the fact the Medvedev mentions about the increased importance of the Romania and EU in the negotiations and the solution of the conflict. This is due to the political Pro-Russia vector of transnistria and because of the direct Romanian support for Moldova armed forces in the transnistrian conflict in 1992. The analysts are also surprised by the omitting of the OSCE as one of the most important mediators in the conflict. Some analysts mention that Mr. Medvedev believes that the importance of this organization is so low, that it should not be mentioned. <\/p>\n

The declarations of Mr. Medvedev may evidence a change in the extern politics of Russia, a perestroika or maybe a restart of the attitude concerning the traditional politics of Russia in this part of the Europe. Some analysts believe that the declarations of Medvedev may be a sign of the solution of the transnistrian conflict and the retreat of the Russian armed forces from the territory of Moldova in the close future. But also it is possible that these declarations are a well established tactics to win some time before the political situation in Moldova changes. This is very probable because recently Medvedev declared that the possible solution of the transnistrian conflict will be discussed after the parliamentary elections in Moldova which will take place in November.
