Prime Minister Vlad Filat met European Parliament President Jerzy Buzek in Brussels on 15 September.<\/p>\n

The sides discussed the reforms implemented by the Moldovan government, their results and the steps that should be made further by the country, the government’s communications and press relations department has said.<\/p>\n

After the meeting, the officials made press statements.<\/p>\n

Jerzy Buzek said that he was glad to see the Moldovan premier, whom he met periodically, this being the third meeting. Referring to Moldova’s European integration, the official said that the dream of the Moldovan citizens could become true step by step, by concrete actions.<\/p>\n

He said that by its actions, the Moldovan government was guiding the country on the right path. Although they are sometimes risky, the implemented reforms are necessary.<\/p>\n

"The Republic of Moldova reminds me about my country – Poland – where in a string of severe reforms had been implemented the pre-accession period. At that moment people did not understand them. In two to three years they gave a fantastic result and I won the European elections, despite the fact that initially, I was unpopular," the former Polish premier, Jerzy Buzek, said.<\/p>\n

As concerns reforms in justice and internal affairs, Jerzy Buzek said that these were difficult, but typical of all countries aiming at meeting the European values.<\/p>\n

The high official said that he backed Moldova’s European aspirations and that the country would be further supported in this respect.<\/p>\n

He congratulated Moldova on the fact that it overcame the economic recession, specifying that the country was facing a difficult period, but the government was able cope with it.<\/p>\n

For his part, Vlad Filat thanked for the opportunity to have this meeting, saying that although he had flown 16 hours from China to Brussels, the warm atmosphere made him forget that.<\/p>\n

Filat said that although Moldova was facing difficult times, the European integration was the top priority and the government was taking all the necessary steps to this end. The premier said that the government had clear objectives in this respect, such as: the signing of an association agreement with the EU, the liberalization of the visa regime for Moldovan citizens and the signing of an agreement on deep free trade.<\/p>\n

Filat said that the implemented reforms were necessary and their success depended also on the constant support given by the European Commission to the Republic of Moldova. In the context, the premier thanked for the 90-million-euro grant in macro-financial assistance, recently approved by the European Parliament. He specified that the aid came in the right moment and would contribute to the implementation of reforms.<\/p>\n

Referring to reforms in justice and internal affairs, Filat said that Moldova had undertaken several steps in this respect, and that during the meeting with EU Commissioner for Internal Affairs Cecilia Malmstrom, he requested an extra-assessment in this field, so that Moldova develop more quickly in this direction.<\/p>\n

"I assure you that all commitments made by the Republic of Moldova will be fulfilled. Moldova will join the EU when it will comply with European norms. We have been working hard to this end," Filat said.<\/p>\n

Asked by journalists about the snap parliamentary elections in Moldova, Jerzy Buzek said that he was looking forward to the polls and wished success to Vlad Filat.
