Acting President Mihai Ghimpu today said that the binder which unites the elements of the Alliance for European Integration (AIE) "is hard and with thorns." "The existence of AIE is as necessary as the existence of a free press," the parliament speaker said at a news conference held at the Purcari winery – the first unit visited in a fact-collecting tour on the situation of the Moldovan wine-makers.<\/p>\n

Mihai Ghimpu held the news conference after he had visited Romania and Georgia – the first countries which provide construction materials and money to build houses in the flood-hit settlements. "This money certainly comes from the two countries’ tax payers, but I was the one to make the requests," Ghimpu said.<\/p>\n

The acting president, who is also the leader of the Liberal Party (PL), said that PL will start the campaign for referendum on 23 August. "It is the communists’ right to call for the referendum’s boycotting, but the local authorities who make such appeals are punishable, as they do not obey the parliament decision," Mihai Ghimpu said while answering a question on the plebiscite for changing the presidential election mechanism.<\/p>\n

Asked whether he will run for the office of president, Ghimpu avoided a direct answer: "You know how it was used to say in former times: if the people want!"<\/p>\n

While commenting on the Russian Foreign Ministry’s reaction to his decree to award distinctions to the Ilascu group, the acting president said: "As if there is only one thing left for me to do – to comment on Medvedev’s decrees." "Time will pass, and they will get rid of the idea that Moldova should react to orders by a sergeant from Novosibirsk," the PL leader said.<\/p>\n

Mihai Ghimpu said that the decree, under which the Ilascu group was awarded distinctions, came too late. He added that, according to the decree, "gratitude is given to all those who fought for Moldova’s independence and integrity."<\/p>\n
