Prime Minister Vlad Filat today had a meeting with the head of the community of Moldovans in Quebec, Ala Mindicanu, the government’s communications and press relations department has said.<\/p>\n

Filat briefed Mindicanu on the social and political situation in Moldova, noting that the country was being strongly supported by its foreign partners.<\/p>\n

The premier said that in spite of the impossibility to create an agency for relations with Moldovans from abroad, the government was undertaking actions to assist Moldovan citizens abroad. In particular, the government started negotiations with the European Union on the liberalization of the visa regime, the juridical and social protection of Moldovans. Also, passports for Moldovans are now issued by diplomatic missions abroad, he said.<\/p>\n

In the context, Filat pointed out the decision to open an embassy in Spain and the intention to open honorific consulates in countries where a great number of Moldovans reside.<\/p>\n

Ala Mindicanu spoke about the Moldovan community in Quebec, founded in 2008, specifying that it was the first organization of Moldovans in the province of Quebec, Canada.<\/p>\n

She said that efforts had been taken to organize and unite the diaspora in order to step up its economic and spiritual potential and to contribute to the efficient integration of Moldovans in the Canadian society.<\/p>\n

"Over 7,000 Moldovans reside in Quebec," Mindicanu said.<\/p>\n

The community focuses on assistance for new residents, their employment and involvement in cultural and economic activities.<\/p>\n

Ala Mindicanu said that Canada could provide many economic opportunities for Moldova, including investments.<\/p>\n

Mindicanu also informed Filat about the recent launch of the first annual brochure on the life of the Moldovan diaspora in Quebec.<\/p>\n
