"Occupation Mythology in Moldova: Essence and Political Using" was the topic of the roundtable conference organized in Chisinau on Tuesday by the Historic Memory foundation of Russia, the ProMoldova Association of Historians and Political Scientists, in collaboration with the ava.md informational analytical portal.<\/p>\n

The event gathered historians and political scientists from Moldova, Russia and Ukraine.<\/p>\n

Dr. Sergiu Nazaria, Chairman of the ProMoldova Association, offered an opinion that the ethnic Moldovans opposed to the Romanian authorities in 1918 much stronger than did the ethnic Russians and Ukrainians, who lived here as well. In his words, there exist quite a number of documents, including Romanian ones, indicating that the local population disliked the coming of the Romanian authorities onto this land.<\/p>\n

"Reports and other official letters show that only Russian-speaker landowners and the clergy, who constituted merely 2-3% of the populace, welcomed the Romanian authorities. They did not speak Romanian, but felt that was the only way for them to save their property and their socio-political status and privileges. Bessarabia’s bureaucratic apparatus was dominated by Russian-speaker officials, and they welcomed the Sfatul \u0162\u0103rii [Council of the Country] and the Romanians’ coming because the Soviet power would deprive them of everything they possessed.<\/p>\n

Nazaria called the day of June 28, 1940 as one of the symbols of the Moldovan statehood.<\/p>\n

"If to proceed from the assumption that Bessarabia [the larger portion of the modern Republic of Moldova lying between the Prut and Dniester Rivers, used to belong to Romania in 1918-1940, and went over to the Soviet Union according to the Molotov-Ribbentrop Pact signed between Stalin and Hitler in 1939] is a genuine Romanian land and was legitimately included into Romania in 1918, then June 28, 1940 should be regarded as a tragedy and as an occupation of Bessarabia, and all what happened here afterwards must be regarded as illicit from the international law viewpoint. But all documents cannot be interpreted in two ways", said the historian, and added that "not a single country of the world objected then, and all countries supported Bessarabia’ transition into the Soviet Union".<\/p>\n

Ukrainian historian and political scientist Artem Filipenko reminded that in 1939 the Soviet Union annexed the territories of Western Ukraine and Belarus.<\/p>\n

"If to compare the situations with Bessarabia and Western Ukraine and to recognize the occupation fact, we can keep on developing the domino principle with respect to other countries", he said.<\/p>\n

In his words, Ukraine presently cannot remain indifferent to what is going on in Moldova.<\/p>\n

"We are neighbors, and a considerable diaspora of ethnic Ukrainians lives here. We in Ukraine also feel the pressure put on us by Romania, which has territorial claims to us. For a considerable proportion of the population aged over 40 the coming of Soviet troops was not perceived as an occupation. The assessment of the events of the Soviet period is like pouring salt on wounds, because people used to live much better under the Soviets than now", the Ukrainian historian said.<\/p>\n

Anatol Taran, Deputy Chairman of the National Liberal Party of Moldova, presumes the date of June 28 should be regarded and interpreted from the viewpoint of the Moldovan people’s deep-laid interests.<\/p>\n

"One can indeed ponder long that upon becoming a part of the Russian Empire in 1812, Bessarabia received a socio-economic development. But from the viewpoint of the formation of the Moldovans’ ethnic-cultural community, can this really be regarded as progressive? I mean, can it be regarded as progressive that we had in fact lost, wasted the 19th century, and have not created a national intelligentsia of our own?
