Forty five additional polling stations will be opened abroad for Moldovan citizens to participate in the constitutional referendum on nationwide presidential elections, due on 5 September 2010. Thus, the total number of polling stations opened abroad will reach 79.<\/p>\n

Most polling stations, 20, will be opened in Italy, six will be opened in Russia and the USA each, five in Romania, four in Portugal, Greece, Germany and the United Kingdom each, three in France and another three in Spain, and one polling station in Cyprus.<\/p>\n

Prime Minister Vlad Filat told a news conference today that a decision to this effect had been taken after consultations with the host countries and representatives of diasporas. The government will send a demarche to this effect to the Central Electoral Commission (CEC) today.<\/p>\n

The prime minister said that seven people would work in each polling station, of whom five would be nominated by the parliamentary political parties, the head of the polling station and a person nominated by the CEC. Observers will be delegated too.<\/p>\n

Filat said that some adjustments might be made after the referendum in order to secure better preparation for the snap parliamentary election and the presidential polls due next November.<\/p>\n

The spending necessary to open polling stations abroad will be met by Moldova’s development partners, who have already given their consent. Presently, talks on the matter are being held with the European Commission in Chisinau, Filat specified.<\/p>\n
