Prime Minister Vlad Filat and EU ambassadors to Chisinau today visited the customs point in Leuseni, the government’s press service has said.<\/p>\n

In the mourning the ambassadors visited the headquarters of the Moldovan Border Guard Service to get acquainted with the technologies used to discover border frauds, its achievements and the problems it faces.<\/p>\n

The visit’s goal was to take note of Moldova’s preparedness in terms of border security, which is an important aspect in discussions on the liberalization of the visa regime with the EU.<\/p>\n

The visit at the Leuseni customs point started with a presentation of technologies used to check IDs, including biometric passports. Subsequently, Filat and the ambassadors got acquainted with the way of checking passenger transport means.<\/p>\n

The customs officers said that discontented people who want to submit complaints can appeal the hot lines 27-92-10, 27-92-13, the numbers being posted right inside the customs point. Filat asked that these phone numbers be more visible. Annually, about one million people and over 350,000 transport means cross the border via the Leuseni point. As many as 147 infringements have been discovered and 30,000 cigarettes packs have been confiscated since the beginning of the year.<\/p>\n

Subsequently, the visitors were informed about how people holding small-distance cross-border permits cross the Moldovan-Romanian border. About 400 such people have crossed the border via this point since the beginning of the year. All in all, the border was crossed about 45,000 times on the basis of these permits.<\/p>\n

Filat also expressed interest in the terminal were cargo trucks are checked. The customs officers said that this terminal had been built up with the support of the EU’s TACIS project, noting that it is daily crossed by about 350 trucks. Filat and the ambassadors wanted to personally see how trucks are scanned. They got into a special roentgen scanning device Rapiscan and assisted the checking procedure.<\/p>\n

Filat said that the used technology is extremely useful as it allows checking cargoes in details.<\/p>\n

The customs officers said that if transporters have all the necessary documents, the border crossing procedure does not last more than 40 minutes.<\/p>\n

During the same visit, the participants had the possibility of sailing on the Prut River alongside Moldovan border guard officers and Romanian border police officers. The prime minister, the ambassadors and journalists saw live how the security of the Moldovan-Romanian border is ensured.<\/p>\n

Back on the Prut bank, Filat said that presently Moldova has 38 such boats and noted that their number is planned to be increased in 2011.<\/p>\n

Filat said that for Moldova to benefit from the EU’s liberalized visa regime, it must meet a string of requirements, among which the consolidation of border security.<\/p>\n

"We are completely involved in the fulfilment of these rigours. Part of requirements are already being implemented, we are working on others, such as the issuance of biometric passports starting from 1 January 2011, and we also have debts that we must liquidate," Filat said.<\/p>\n

"I am sure that in a very short time, it will be possible for us to tell our European partners that we met all the requirements necessary for Moldova to benefit from a liberalized visa regime with the EU," the prime minister said.<\/p>\n

Filat said he would personally monitor the way relevant structures fulfil the EU’s requirements.<\/p>\n
