Doctors in Chisinau are concerned about the health of the parents of Ilie Cazac, the young man detained by separatist forces in Tiraspol. They have affirmed that Stela Surchicean and Alexandru Vini\u0163chii risk entering a coma, or even death, if they continue with their hunger strike. The parents of Ilie Cazac have been on hunger strike for two weeks, protesting outside the Russian Embassy in Chisinau, hoping through this action to secure the release of their son who has been held in detention in Tiraspol for three months.<\/p>\n

On the fourteenth day of the hunger strike (June 25), the mother of Ilie Cazac, Stela Surchicean, was admitted to the gastroenterology department of the Republican Hospital in Chisinau. Her treatment will last two weeks, but only as of Monday 28 June will she be able to receive liquid food. Her husband, Alexandru Vini\u0163chii, has refused to be admitted and continues to protest outside the Russian Embassy. He has said that he will stay there until he enters a coma. The mother of Ilie Cazac has stated that she intends to return so as to continue to protest with her husband outside the Russian Embassy, to secure a meeting with her son, and his immediate and unconditional release.<\/p>\n

Human rights NGOs from the Republic of Moldova and lawyers for the parents of Ilie Cazac have expressed concern that during their two weeks of protest, the Russian Embassy has not invited Stela Surchicean and Alexandru Vini\u0163chii to discuss their problem, and has not made visible and effective efforts with respect to organising a meeting between them and their son, Ilie Cazac. Thus, civil society organisations in Moldova are seeking the assistance of NGOs outside Moldova to raise awareness of the situation of Ilie Cazac in the media, and likewise to inform international public opinion.<\/p>\n

It should be noted that only the head of the OSCE Mission to Moldova, Philip Remler, has seen Ilie Cazac. It is not known for the time being when Stela Surchicean and Alexandru Vini\u0163chii will be able to see their son again. Their state of health is now so precarious that they risk never seeing their son again, given the potentially grave repercussions of their hunger strike.<\/p>\n

Ilie Cazac, a young man of 25, employed by the Fiscal Inspectorate in Bender (Tighina), was arrested on March 19. With the exception of the head of the OSCE mission, no one has seen him, and his right to receive visits from his parents has been neglected for three months. The parents of Ilie Cazac began a hunger strike for an indefinite period on June 12 of this year. They hope through this action to secure the intervention of the Russian authorities over the Tiraspol leadership, taking into account that the Russian Federation has de facto control over the Transnistrian region, and provides political, economic and diplomatic support to the separatist regime in Tiraspol, and that Igor Smirnov (president of the self-proclaimed Dnestr Moldovan Republic), along with the rest of the senior figures in the Tiraspol administration, are Russian citizens.<\/p>\n\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
