Moldovan acting President Mihai Ghimpu today signed a decree declaring 28 June 1940 as the day of the Soviet occupation. Under the document, Moldova will annually mark the day of Soviet occupation and of commemoration of the victims of the totalitarian communist regime on 28 June, the presidential press service has said.<\/p>\n

According to the presidential decree, on 28 June, the state flag will be lowered at half-mast, flowers will be laid at graves, monuments and memorial venues to the victims of the Soviet occupation and of the totalitarian communist regime, and people will commemorate them by standing silent for a minute at 10:00.<\/p>\n

The decree also stipulates that on this day, the public authorities, enterprises and organizations shall organize no large-scale entertainment activities and lessons on the issue shall be held in all education institutions and summer camps.<\/p>\n

The editorial staffs of periodicals, news agencies, radio stations and TV channels are recommended to take into account the peculiarity of the day of 28 June while editing publications, distributing reports and working out schedules of programmes.<\/p>\n

The decree also says that the Chisinau city hall shall initiate the procedure of erecting a monument to the victims of the Soviet occupation and of the totalitarian communist regime on the Great National Assembly Square in front of the government’s headquarters. Until the monument is built up, all the ceremonies of commemoration of the Soviet-era victims shall take place on the Great National Assembly Square where the city hall will set a temporary commemorative stone on 28 June 2010.<\/p>\n
