Deputy Prime Minister for Reintegration Victor Osipov and the head of the Central Electoral Commission, Eugen Stirbu, on 21 June held a briefing on the latter’s detention by the Transnistrian bodies, the government’s press service has said.<\/p>\n

Stirbu said that after monitoring the presidential election in Poland, he was returning via the airport in Odessa, Ukraine, and then via the Transnistrian region. Stirbu was detained at the crossing point in Cuciurgan on allegations that he had been put on a wanted list. After about three hours, Eugen Stirbu was bussed to Tiraspol, where he was told that a criminal case had been opened against him as he had organized elections in Corjova village, Dubasari district, which is under Moldova’s jurisdiction but where Transnistrian bodies operate.<\/p>\n

"I regard what happened as an unpleasant accident. But it’s good that I was released due to efforts by the government and the OSCE," Stirbu said, adding that he was passed on to Head of the OSCE Mission Philip Remler in Tighina, after which he was accompanied by Victor Osipov.<\/p>\n

Osipov said that it was for the first time ever that the law enforcement and security bodies from the left bank of the Dniester reacted in a constructive and swift manner.<\/p>\n

"I highly appreciate the openness that they displayed, the more so that there are other cases that must be solved," Victor Osipov said. He thanked the OSCE Mission and the other mediators who involved to release Stirbu, noting that the government closely watched the process and Prime Minister Vlad Filat kept it permanently under control.<\/p>\n

The minister also noted that the case pointed out once again the impediments to the free movement of people across the Transnistrian region, as well as the effects of cases opened by both Tiraspol and Chisinau against representatives of the two sides. He added that these problems must be solved within political negotiations.
