Ex-President of Moldova, leader of the opposition Moldovan Communist Party MP Vladimir Voronin is going to stand for presidency if the republic eventually decides upon holding a direct election of president by the people.<\/p>\n

In his interview with Omega news agency of Chisinau, Voronin stated he is not afraid of direct elections, though himself and the MCP leadership stands against this.<\/p>\n

"The most interesting thing is, as a matter of fact I should be the one most interested in this because I now have the right to be nominated as a presidential candidate. Some are saying that my presidential mandate is de jure continuing because Ghimpu is only a semi-president or an under-president. But no, I shall prove my constitutional right to stand for the Moldovan presidency – from a clean page. Strangely, they [ruling coalition] seem to be disregarding such possibility", said Voronin.<\/p>\n

He believes the parliamentary form governance is the most democratic one, meeting the people’s interests because in such case a country is ruled not by one person but by a collective organ – the parliament.<\/p>\n

"What will you do if you come to be ruled by an ill person, like is now in Moldova? What if you happen to have a president like Ghimpu? You will have to stare at him all 4 years?", wondered the ex-president.<\/p>\n

He offered some other arguments against returning to the presidential form of governance, which he believes is "very complicated an enterprise… In such case, we will have to amend the Constitution very heavily – minimum 50 Articles to be revised. This will take much time. Then you have to send amendments to the Constitutional Court and for examination and consultancy to European structures, and then to approve the amendments in parliament. Our legislative forum is disunited. Therefore, naturally, new Articles will have something that will be at odds with our Communist faction’s outlooks. If so, we shall not indeed vote for them", said the MCP leader.<\/p>\n

Voronin emphasized that the Alliance for European Integration deliberately drags parliament dissolution and announcement of an early parliamentary election date so as to remain in parliament for all the 4 years.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
