"The constitutional problem faced by Moldova is like a litmus paper for the democratic situation in the country. Moldova needs a long-term government and the Venice Commission clearly showed the way to overcome the present situation," EU Commissioner for Enlargement and European Neighbourhood Policy Stefan Fule said in his speech in the parliament on Friday, May 14, 2010.<\/p>\n

The European Union official participated in a festive meeting of the parliament dedicated to the Europe Day, and gave a speech before the MPs. Acting President, Parliament Speaker Mihai Ghimpu thanked for the presence of the European Commissioner. He specified that the today’s plenary meeting was a historical one, as such an event dedicated to the Europe Day was organised for the first time ever.<\/p>\n

"The presence of the EU commissioner for enlargement and European neighbourhood policy represents recognition of Moldova’s European aspirations and vocation. Over the last time, the European partners have showed an unprecedented openness and qualitative changes in the European Union’s relations with Moldova. I am sure that Moldova’s efforts to get closer to the European Union are assessed at their true value, and will generate adequate response actions on behalf of EU," Ghimpu said.<\/p>\n

Stefan Fule noticed the lack of the parliamentary opposition, and specified that he would like to personally discuss with the representatives of the Party of Communists. The European official also informed about the progress made by Moldova in terms of European integration. "A meeting of the negotiators on the association agreement will be held in three weeks. A new agreement, a much more ambitious one, which EU is sign with Moldova. Next month, the dialogue on the liberalization of the visa regime will be launched as well. At that time, we are to decide the conditions in which the Moldovan could move without visas," Fule said.<\/p>\n

The European official stressed that the political situation in Moldova is presently a challenge for the government, as well as for all the political forces. "The constitutional problem is a litmus paper for the democratic situation. The parliamentary elections are likely to be held, but this would be a short-term tactics. Moldova needs a long-term government, and it is vital that the society focuses on combating problems and the crisis. The political forces should prove courage and find a compromise. The Venice Commission clearly showed the way to settle the problem. We expect a compromise in the parliament, even if the attempts have failed so far. The reforms should continue not for Brussels, but for the Moldovan citizens," Stefan Fule added.<\/p>\n

Attending the meeting, Prime Minister Vlad Filat said that we have presently all the reasons to be optimistic, in the light of the commitments taken by Moldova and the support on behalf of the European partners. "The European Union is in Moldova, and Moldova is to be in the European Union soon," Filat said.<\/p>\n

The leader of the Democratic Party, Marian Lupu, and the one of the Our Moldova Alliance, First Deputy Parliament Speaker Serafim Urechean gave speeches before MPs too.<\/p>\n
