The current Parliament of the Republic of Moldova should be disbanded before the end of 2010, not in 3 or 4 years, as Moldova’s Acting President, Parliament Chairman Mihai Ghimpu is proposing, Venice Commission Chairman Gianni Buquicchio stated in his interview to Radio Free Europe on Thursday.<\/p>\n

Buquicchio said the governing Alliance for European Integration ought to reach a consensus with the rest political forces in parliament so as to overcome the constitutional crisis. He said politicians are responsible to their citizens, so they must do everything possible to ride out the crisis. And they must make sure that Article 78 in the Constitution is amended before the current Parliament is dissolved.<\/p>\n

Gianni Buquicchio said that both amendments drafts – the AEI’s and the Communist Party’s – are good, and analogous documents work in some European countries, too.<\/p>\n

And still, he said, it’s high time the sides reached a compromise without any further delay because it is necessary to chose only one out of the two documents. Buquicchio continues to believe that the parties will reach an accord, will jointly amend the Constitution, and the acting president will at last announce an early parliamentary election date.<\/p>\n

The Venice Commission Chairperson confirmed the possibility of using the variant of a consultative referendum.<\/p>\n
