"The parliamentary commission for the amendment of Article 78 of the constitution (on the presidential election mechanism) should analyze the draft of the Alliance for European Integration (AIE) and the communists’ one, and reach consensus in order to submit a final draft to the parliament. If the parliament cannot adopt such a decision, we will return to discussions with the Venice Commission," acting President Mihai Ghimpu said upon his return from a visit to the Council of Europe.<\/p>\n

Ghimpu stressed that the parliamentary commission for the amendment of Article 78 should consider the two variants. "We will discuss both drafts. We shall see, maybe we make one or find a better variant. If they are not voted, we will return to discussions with the Venice Commission, and afterwards we will know whether we will have snap elections or not."<\/p>\n

Ghimpu said that, in Strasburg, he discussed the constitutional crisis in Moldova with many officials, underlining that he found support on behalf of everybody. He also said that Council of Europe Secretary General Thorbjorn Jagland offered to act as mediator in settling the constitutional crisis.<\/p>\n

The acting president added that he had not discussed the parliament’s dissolution. "Discussions will still be held, as the Europeans, as I understood, do not understand very well the state of things. There is no firm decision to this effect for the time being, as the Venice Commission has not convened yet."<\/p>\n

The Constitutional Court has earlier approved of both the drafts on the amendment of the presidential election procedure put forward by the opposition and the AIE.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
