Moldovan Parliament Speaker and acting President Mihai Ghimpu today met Special Representative of the Council of Europe’s (CE) Secretary-General in the Republic of Moldova, Birute Abraitiene, the parliament’s media relations department has said.<\/p>\n

Ghimpu welcomed the Council of Europe’s involvement in the consolidation of democratic values in Moldova, as well as its efforts to enhance Moldova’s visibility in Europe.<\/p>\n

Mihai Ghimpu said that the government has been making efforts to achieve the objectives seen in its action programme, especially the one of democratization and European integration. He stressed that the government fully honours the commitments assumed towards the Council of Europe.<\/p>\n

Referring to the internal situation, Mihai Ghimpu presented the viewpoint of the leaders of the ruling Alliance for European Integration (AEI) on eventual solutions to the constitutional crisis.<\/p>\n

Presently we are crossing a very important period in relations between Moldova and the Council of Europe, Birute Abraitiene said. The CE backs the Moldovan government’s priorities and will do its utmost to help Moldova efficiently implement the democratic reforms. Abraitiene recommended that the European principles and values should be observed given that Moldova has been a member of the Council of Europe for15 years.<\/p>\n
