Acting President Mihai Ghimpu along with his Romanian counterpart Traian Basescu have met students of the university Alaxandru Ioan Cuza from the city of Iasi (a former capital of the Principality of Moldova), eastern Romania, the presidential press service has said.<\/p>\n

In his address to the students, President Ghimpu said that the visit to Romania re-opened a new stage in the relations between two states that have the same identity and speak the same language. "We will prove that we, the Romanians, are able to help each other. It is very important that our relations are an example for other states, as we are Romanians from both banks of the Prut River," the head of state said.<\/p>\n

Ghimpu also stressed the importance of the agreements signed between the two states, as their implementation will allow settling many problems faced by the Moldovan society. President Ghimpu emphasized the importance to carry out programmes on Moldova’s reformation elaborated by the Alliance for European Integration (AIE). He said that the final goal of these programmes is to secure a democratic state based on the rule of law. "No matter whether snap elections are held or not, the AIE’s programme should be implemented," Ghimpu said.<\/p>\n

The head of state urged Moldovan students to study as well as possible, as Moldova needs high-skilled specialists in all the areas. "The economy, justice, medicine, education and other fields need good specialists. I invite you to return and replace us, the ones who are in power now," Mihai Ghimpu stressed.<\/p>\n

The head of state said that the role which the young generation may play to create and consolidate civil society in Moldova is of utmost importance. He said that a strongly-structured civil society aware of the values and objectives which it promotes, can be, at the same time, not only an indispensable and influential partner to every government, but also a very efficient obstacle able to hinder abuses by any government.<\/p>\n

After summing up the results of the official visit to Romania, President Ghimpu stressed that the visit was full of content. "All the discussions held with President Traian Basescu, as well as the meetings with other Romanian officials, gave me confidence that there is an increased common interest in extending and turning to account the present strategic partnership between Moldova and Romania in all the mutual interest cooperation fields as well as possible," Mihai Ghimpu said.<\/p>\n

In his speech, Romanian President Traian Basescu said that Moldova is a 100-per-cent European state, which has the right to a future in the big family of European states. "The people from Moldova have the right to move freely to Europe, Romania, just like every European citizen," Basescu said.<\/p>\n

The meeting with students of the university Alexandru Ioan Cuza was the last one on the agenda of the official visit to Romania by President Mihai Ghimpu. The official delegation has returned to Moldova Wednesday evening.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
