Lawmakers of the first democratically elected parliament repeatedly signed Moldova’s Declaration of Independence during a solemn meeting today. The document was destroyed by fire during the last April riots.<\/p>\n

At the beginning of the meeting, lawmakers of the first and present legislative body watched a documentary on the activity of the first democratically elected parliament and stood silent for a minute to commemorate the departed MPs of the first parliament.<\/p>\n

Acting President and current Parliament Speaker Mihai Ghimpu said that the first democratically elected parliament gave the go-ahead to parliamentarism in Moldova and the fact that it convened today represents a reference point on the path to Moldova’s democracy. Moldova’s first parliament adopted a string of historical legislative acts that laid the basis of the Republic of Moldova, such as the Declaration of Moldova’s Sovereignty, passed on 23 June 1990 and the Declaration of Independence, adopted on 27 August 1991, Ghimpu said.<\/p>\n

At the same time, Mihai Ghimpu stressed the historical importance of the procedure of restoring the signatures on the Declaration of Independence. The speaker said that this document proved and showed people’s wish to live in a sovereign and independent state.<\/p>\n

Addressing the parliament, Prime Minister Vlad Filat said that the signing of the Declaration of Independence on 27 August 1991 is a historical event. He underlined that the MPs of the first democratically elected parliament showed special courage and outstanding patriotism. It is not only the restoration of the most important document of Moldova – the Declaration of Independence – that takes place, but also the restoration of historical justice by the return to the political line set by those who voted for independence on 27 August, Filat added.<\/p>\n

The prime minister said that the today’s event is held after the restoration of the values which were at the basis of the decision to create an independent state, of the respect for the citizens and their rights, and foreign political course backed by the overwhelming majority of the citizens – integration into the EU.<\/p>\n
