Even according to very cautious estimates, the damage inflicted to Moldova by the Soviet regime by annihilating the population and massive deportations should reach US$28 billion, maintains Dr. Veaceslav Stavila, a member of the "International Scientific Commission for Studying the Consequences of the Totalitarian, Dictatorial and Anti-Democratic Regimes in the Republic of Moldova Territory in the 20th Century".<\/p>\n

The Doctor of History told a news conference in Infotag that such is the result of his 3-year work in Moldovan archives.<\/p>\n

According to his calculations, US$5.9 billion is the damage caused by the annihilation of 54 thousand Moldovans in Second World War trenches; US$6.2 billion is the historic cost of Stalinist deportations and repressions of 72.5 thousand Bessarabians – the residents of the mainland Moldova; US$15.7 billion – the damage caused by the death of 173.7 thousand people during the 1946\/1947 famine.<\/p>\n

Stavila said he had availed himself of the experience gained and methodology worked out in the Baltic States. In his words, Latvia has assessed its damage at US$18 billion and Lithuania – US$20 billion.<\/p>\n

He explained that the methodology was based on a number of essential components such as e.g. the average age at which the Soviet regime’s victims met their death, the average per capita income as of 1938 (US$76), inflation of the US dollar over the period in question, the average life expectancy at birth as of 1937 (47 years), and other.<\/p>\n

"With an account of these components and knowing the number of people deported and killed (301 thousand), I have received the figure – US$28 billion. So, the average per capita damage size is US$92.4 thousand", concluded historian Veaceslav Stavila.<\/p>\n

Journalists asked the researcher what the use of all those calculations was if there are so few chances of ever receiving a compensation. And Stavila offered a supposition that "everything depends on the political will of the Republic of Moldova’s authorities".<\/p>\n

"My mission is to bring the figures to the knowledge of the public and the government. For example, yet in 1992 the Baltic States founded special commissions for negotiations on the damage sum and compensation with the Russian Federation – the legal successor to the Soviet Union", he said.<\/p>\n

Dr. Stavila presumes that if only Russia recognizes these debts one day, this would be "an extremely important achievement".<\/p>\n

The Moldovan historian went further in his calculations, revealing that the said US$28 billion would be sufficient for "building all necessary trans-national 8-lane highways and all local roads – from anew", or for "purchasing natural gas from the Russian Federation for next 85 years".<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
