Automatic gunfire erupted at the site of rival political rallies in southern Kyrgyzstan today when one or more of ousted President Kurmanbek Bakiev’s guards fired into the air as detractors tried to disrupt his address to a crowd.<\/p>\n

A correspondent for RFE\/RL’s Kyrgyz Service on the scene in the Kyrgyz second city of Osh said Bakiev was whisked away from the scene, where presidential loyalists were squaring off against backers of the interim government that has proclaimed an end to his rule.<\/p>\n

Estimates of the crowd sizes varied widely, with no clear lines between competing demonstrations in close proximity on a central square.<\/p>\n

There were no reports of injury, and minor scuffles continued in the crowd after the gunshot incident.<\/p>\n

Roza Otunbaeva, the leader of the interim government, said Bakiev must stand trial for ordering security forces to open fire on antigovernment protesters in Bishkek last week. Bakiev has denied giving the order to shoot and blamed his opponents for the deaths of the protesters, and says he will step down only if the interim government guarantees his and his family’s security.<\/p>\n

RFE\/RL correspondent Bruce Pannier, who is in Osh, says calm has returned to the city hours after the shooting incident in a central part of the town.<\/p>\n

He says young men are guarding the local administration building and inspecting people wishing to enter but adds that many residents are just finding out about the shooting incident.<\/p>\n

Bakiev On Shaky Ground<\/p>\n

Bakiev fled to southern Kyrgyzstan after the violent crackdown on protests against his rule a week ago. More than 80 people were killed on April 7 in clashes in the capital.<\/p>\n

Some lawmakers from Bakiev’s own Bright Path (Ak-Jol) party have joined the ranks of his opponents, calling for the president’s impeachment.<\/p>\n

Both Moscow and Washington — both of which have air bases in Kyrgyzstan — have offered assistance in efforts to break the ice with the country’s interim leadership. On April 14, Russia pledged $50 million in aid and loans to Kyrgyzstan. Within hours, visiting Assistant Secretary of State Robert Blake had offered help to Kyrgyzstan’s new government.<\/p>\n

A Russian governent spokesman said Prime Minister Vladimir Putin spoke on the phone with Bakiev late on April 14. No details of their conversation were given. Putin’s press service told news agencies that the conversation was "at the initiative of President Kurmanbek Bakiev."<\/p>\n
