The arrest of journalist Ernest Vardanean by the Dniester secret services "discredits the Tiraspol leaders and may complicate the situation in [Moldova’s breakaway] region", the Moldovan Infotag news agency quoted the deputy prime minister for reintegration issues, Victor Osipov, as saying on 13 April.<\/p>\n

Vardanean, 33,  an ethnic Armenian, was arrested on 7 April on suspicions of "espionage and high treason".<\/p>\n

Osipov expressed concern about the fate of journalist Ernest Vardanean and added that the Moldovan authorities would do their best to contribute to his swift release, Infotag said.<\/p>\n

"We agreed with the OSCE mission in Moldova that it would try to induce the Tiraspol authorities to release the journalist. In addition, we will call on the international partners to join efforts to set him free," Osipov was quoted as saying.<\/p>\n

For his part, Moldovan acting President Mihai Ghimpu described Vardanean’s arrest as "a PR action by [Dniester leader] Igor Smirnov and his team",! Infotag said in another report.<\/p>\n

"Tiraspol wants to remind the world about Smirnov and his self-proclaimed republic. They do not like when the country lives in peace and therefore they make themselves heard," Ghimpu said.<\/p>\n

At the same time, the Moldovan private channel Publika TV reported that Moldovan associations of journalists described Vardanean’s arrest as "attempt to the freedom of expression, creativity, media and to the democratic values, which have been violated for years by the Dniester regime".<\/p>\n

In another report, the news agency Infotag said that the Dniester bodies extended the arrest warrant of Ernest Vardanean. It noted that according to the Dniester legislation, Vardanean may be imprisoned to 20 years if he is found guilty of "high treason", although it is not known yet of what crimes he is suspected. Infotag also quoted Vardanean’s former colleagues as saying that he was planning to leave for the USA to work for the UN.
