Sergei Grinevetsky, deputy of the Ukrainian Supreme Rada: Ukraine should build maximum-possible pragmatic relations with Moldova <\/strong><\/p>\n

Upon the coming of a new president, Ukraine has received a possibility of building relations with the Republic of Moldova ‘from a new clean page’ without whatever ideological formulas, and the relations need to be pragmatic to a maximum-possible extent, presumes Sergei Grinevetsky, a deputy of the Ukrainian Supreme Rada [parliament] and one of the strongest candidates for Governor of the Odessa oblast [region], Moldova’s eastern next-door neighbor.<\/p>\n

He remarked in an interview to the Flot2017 Internet publication that heretofore the Moldo-Ukrainian relations had developed fairly spontaneously.<\/p>\n

"The period of post-revolution romanticism only aggravated the problems existing in the relations between Ukraine and Moldova. The official Kiev was laboriously building a union of states that were discontented with Russia, and for that sake Kiev was ready to agree to any concessions", Grinevetsky said.<\/p>\n

He called Transnistria "a smoldering spot", but recognized that the conflict potential there is smaller than at the Caucasus because the Transnistrian region is known to have a lighter weight in the Russia\/West geopolitical games than have Abkhazia and South Ossetia.<\/p>\n

The Ukrainian parliamentarian presumes that on the one hand, Transnistria is a hook that keeps Moldova on the line. But on the other, Transnistria is a potential seat of instability on Ukraine’s southwestern border.<\/p>\n

"The unrecognized ‘Transnistrian Moldovan Republic’, unlike partly recognized Abkhazia and South Ossetia, is situated not on a crossroad of important transit routes, and not in the way of major energy transit lines. Transnistria has no outlet to the sea, and the strength of Russian troops there is not so great to present a serious counter-balance to NATO. Despite [Transnistrian leader] Igor Smirnov’s statements on his readiness to deploy Russia’s Iskander missiles to thus oppose to American missile expansion, Russia would hardly agree to make such step", said the Ukrainian politician.<\/p>\n

In his belief, there were two factors that prevented a breakthrough on the Transnistria direction with the help of the so-called Yushenko plan of 2005: one was the stiff positions of the conflicting sides, who were not ready for a normal full-bodied dialog, and the other one was the absence of political will with the Ukrainian leadership and its generally ill-balanced external policy.<\/p>\n

"As a result, the only step which Kiev decided to make was the imposition of new customs rules on the Transnistrian segment of the Moldova-Ukraine border. The step was perceived by Tiraspol as an economic blockade of Transnistria, and it was advantageous first and foremost to Chisinau. One may indeed dispute about how logical that measure was. But it is perfectly obvious that Ukraine has received nothing in exchange for the step. Moreover, Ukraine even lost something. For instance, passenger and freight railroad transportation via Transnistria has stopped. As a result, Ukraine’s ports on the Danube River and the Ukrainian national railroad company have come to suffer damage", said Sergei Grinevetsky.<\/p>\n
