Witnesses in Kyrgyzstan say at least four people have been killed and several others wounded in the capital Bishkek, after riot police clashed with anti-government protesters in a second day of unrest.<\/p>\n

Witnesses say police first used tear gas and stun grenades Wednesday before opening fire to disperse thousands of demonstrators who seized police vehicles in Bishkek. Demonstrators demanded the resignation of President Kurmanbek Bakiyev as they marched from opposition headquarters to presidential offices.<\/p>\n

The unrest spread to the town of Naryn, where at least 1,000 protesters took over the local government building.<\/p>\n

In Talas, witnesses say demonstrators tried to storm the local police headquarters Wednesday, a day after hundreds of protesters clashed with police. Protesters briefly held the regional governor hostage.<\/p>\n

Kyrgyz officials say at least 85 police officers were injured in Tuesday’s clashes in Talas. Prime Minister Daniyar Usenov called opposition "bandits" Wednesday.<\/p>\n

Authorities responded by detaining several opposition leaders.<\/p>\n

Those detained include Almazbek Atambayev and former parliamentary speaker Omurbek Tekebayev. Another opposition leader, Temir Sariyev, was arrested early Wednesday as he arrived on a flight from Moscow.<\/p>\n

Internet access was also reportedly blocked in many areas.<\/p>\n

The U.S. embassy in Kyrgyzstan said it was deeply concerned by the unrest and urged all parties to engage in talks to resolve the dispute peacefully.<\/p>\n

Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Grigory Karasin called for restraint in the former Soviet republic, urging the government not to use force against protesters.<\/p>\n

Anti-government discontent has been rising in Kyrgyzstan, a mountainous impoverished country of five million people. The nation hosts a U.S. air base that supports military operations in Afghanistan.<\/p>\n

Kyrgyz authorities have clamped down on independent media. Last week, Kyrgyz police confiscated newsroom computers in a raid on a television station and suspended a pro-opposition newspaper.<\/p>\n

The OSCE Chairperson-in-Office, Kazakhstan’s State Secretary and Foreign Minister Kanat Saudabayev, in a phone conversation with Kyrgyz Foreign Minister Kadyrbek Sarbayev today expressed deep concern about the unrest in Kyrgyzstan.<\/p>\n

Saudabayev said: "The OSCE calls for calm and restraint on all sides, and counts on the government and opposition to show political will and wisdom in resolving together their points of difference in the interests of the people of Kyrgyzstan."<\/p>\n

"The OSCE recognizes that there are political, economic and social issues underlying the unrest, which need to be addressed through broad political dialogue. The Organization stands ready to facilitate such a dialogue."<\/p>\n\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
