Acting President Mihai Ghimpu has said that the draft new constitution is ready and will be sent to the Venice Commission for expert assessment. Ghimpu said that the new constitution was worked out and the commission for constitutional reform will make it public in a short time. <\/p>\n

Consultations with the leaders of the parliament’s factions will continue till then. The leaders of the Alliance for European Integration (AIE) decided to press ahead with consultations to overcome the political crisis. But I stick to the position that the constitutional crisis will not be solved if we merely amend the article on the president’s election, Mihai Ghimpu said. <\/p>\n

Ghimpu stressed that the new constitution has about 30 new articles, and another 70 articles were amended. We did not touch the key articles – on sovereignty, territorial integrity and human rights, he said. Asked by journalists to specify the name of the official language in the new constitution, Ghimpu said that nobody doubts that Moldova’s residents speak the Romanian language. <\/p>\n

‘Now, the Council of Europe promotes a policy, according to which the member states of this organization should not have linguistic norms. Besides, the state language is clearly put down in the Declaration on Independence.’ <\/p>\n

The decision to adopt a new constitution via referendum aroused hot disputes in Moldova, as well as in European structures. The Venice Commission recommended that the Moldovan authorities call elections and amend only the article on the president’s election. The AIE leaders, including Vlad Filat, specified that, if the idea of a referendum is not backed by the European structures and the leadership will try to identify other solutions.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
