A referendum on the adoption of a new constitution is likely to be held on 6 or 13 June 2010, the leader of the Liberal Party, Mihai Ghimpu, has said during a TV programme.<\/p>\n

The four leaders of the ruling Alliance for European Integration said that presently it is more efficient to hold a referendum because this would allow the perpetuation of the democratic processes launched by the current government. At the same time, the four leaders said that the idea to adopt a new constitution may be dropped if European bodies do not back it.<\/p>\n

Recently, the Venice Commission has sent a message to the Moldovan authorities, recommending that the parliament should amend only the article of the constitution which details the mechanism for electing the president, after which it should call an early parliamentary election. The commission specified that the early election cannot be avoided.<\/p>\n

The leader of the senior coalition partner Liberal Democratic Party, Vlad Filat, told the same TV programme that he saw no reason in changing the constitution if Moldova remains without support from European bodies. "The alliance took a consolidated decision, which is going to be consulted with the population, but if European partners have a negative position on the organization of a referendum, we will look for other solutions," Filat said.<\/p>\n

The leader of the minor coalition partner Our Moldova Alliance, Serafim Urechean, described the decision to announce a referendum as "courageous".<\/p>\n

A representative of the Democratic Party, Dumitru Diacov, said that the decision on the referendum had not been discussed within the Alliance for European Integration and nobody has seen yet the draft new constitution.
