There is no border in the security zone (within the Transnistrian region of Moldova), with the peacekeeping forces being in charge of ensuring peace and security of citizens and issues emerging in this zone are in the remit of the Joint Control Commission (JCC).<\/p>\n

Moldova’s co-chairman in the JCC Ion Solonenco said this after an 18 February meeting of the commission.<\/p>\n

Solonenco said that all attempts by the Transnistrian side to legitimate actions by the border guard posts, which had been illegally installed in the security zone and which detained Moldovan citizens, are in breach of the agreements from Moscow and Odessa concerning the peaceful settlement of the conflict in Moldova’s Transnistrian region.<\/p>\n

Transnistrian co-chairman in the JCC Oleg Belyakov confirmed Solonenco’s position when admitting in front of journalists the inexistence of a border between the two banks of the Dniestre River.<\/p>\n

Also today, the Moldovan delegation to the JCC condemned actions by the Transnistrian law enforcement bodies who on 16 February held 11 people carrying sleighs loaded with goods to deliver them to the rehabilitation centre from the village of Corjova. The Transnistrian bodies insisted that they should pass through customs points and pay taxes. "The problem was solved after the Moldovan and Transnistrian co-chairmen in the JCC intervened. But we are set to approach the issue of providing Moldova-run villages situated on the left bank of the Dniestre with goods of utmost importance in winter at one of the next meetings," Solonenco said.<\/p>\n

The Moldovan delegation insisted that the Transnistrian side explain the presence of armed law enforcers in the security zone at the next meeting.<\/p>\n
